One night, the entire family of Seth Dhaniram is murdered by five gangsters. But luckily, his five year old daughter, Pinky,is saved. Grey-haired, comically parsimonious widower Gokulchand lives a middle-class lifestyle in Agra, India, runs a shop selling essential food items, along with his sons, Manohar and Kishore. While Manohar is employed and married to Devki, and has two children, Roopa and Munna, Kishore is studying Engineering. Gokulchand would like to get rich and enjoy life to it's fullest, in order to this he invests in a lottery - which he does not win - but ends up inheriting his brother, Nihalchand's estate and wealth - over 10 Lakh Rupees. The family move into a palatial mansion, Manohar quits his job, and Gokulchand closes down his shop. Shortly thereafter Gokulchand announces that he wants to go to Kashmir for a holiday. Kishore is in love with Rita and would like to get married to her. The family know that Gokulchand will never approve of this as Rita comes from a poor family and lives with her widowed aunt, so they decide to get them engaged in Gokulchand's absence.

Inspector Shiv Nath is a honest and diligent police officer in Bombay, and lives with his wife, Radha, and a young son, Arjun. While making several arrests in connection with counterfeit money and drugs, he comes to know that his close friend, Karamchand is also involved in this racket. Before he could take any action, he himself is arrested by the police for possession of fake money and drugs, and sentenced to a jail term, but he escapes and his whereabouts are unknown. He meets with and falls in love with a petty thief and card-sharp, Rosemary Fernandes. The story is set in Sonapur, a quaint little town that has its share of eccentrics. Shankar (Manoj Bajpayee), the local goldsmith, is head-over-heels in love with his neighbor's daughter Suvarnalata (Aarti Chhabria) much to the chagrin of her father Daya Shastri (Dilip Prabahvalkar). Shastri is bent upon finding her a suitable groom from Dubai and cover her with gold at the wedding, which will help him climb up the social ladder. Armed with nothing but a heart of pure gold, Shankar sets out to overcome the obstacles of devious plots and heartache.
